In the morning of November 17, the opening ceremony of CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute building donated by Group Chairman Mr. Li Weibo was held in Shenzhen Virtual University Park, and there is a sea of flags and distinguished guests. This marks that another prestigious university in Hong Kong officially moved in to the Shenzhen Virtual University Park and the industry-university-research cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong has blossom into a new flower.
More than 200 guests from government and educational circles of both Shenzhen and Hong Kong attended the ceremony including former Vice Chairman of NPC Standing Committee Professor Cheng Siwei, Director of CPPCC Science, Education, Culture, Health and Sport Commission and Former Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology academician Xu Guanhua, Vice Mayor of Shenzhen Zhang Wen, and municipal government officials at all levels, director-general of Innovation and Technology Commission of Hong Kong Wang Rongzhen, Chairman of the Board of CUHK Dr. Zheng Haiquan, Principal Dr. Shen Zuyao, multiple Nobel Prize winners teaching in CUHK and the President of Shenzhen Entrepreneur Association Dr. Liu Yingli. Group Chairman Li was invited to attend the ceremony as the donor to witness the big event.
As donor of the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute building, Chairman Li became the focus of the ceremony. Mr. Cheng Siwei, Mr. Xu Guanhua, Vice Mayor Zhang Wen and other social elites all had talks with Chairman Li and commended Chairman Li's undertaking.
Principal of CUHK Dr. Shen Zuyao said that the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute will serve as a window to showcase CUHK to Chinese mainland and display the great tradition and international results on teaching and research, and create more space for the development of CUHK in Shenzhen and Chinese mainland. CUHK will drive the comprehensive development of competitive industries through the enhanced cooperation between CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute and Shenzhen in education, teaching and research and industrialization.
Principal Shen Zuyao gave special thanks to the generous donation of Glory Harvest Group and Chairman Li Weibo, and commented that it fully demonstrates his heart of "care about education and love for Shenzhen and Hong Kong". Principal Shen Zuyao and Chairman of the Board of CUHK Dr. Zheng Haiquan also issued a memorial plaque in acknowledgement of his contribution.
Chairman Li Weibo expressed that, education and teaching and research are important guarantee for sustainably building the competitiveness of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. He hoped that this donation can set a good example and encourage more enterprises and far-sighted scholars with social responsibilities to care and support the university-industry cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Mr. Cheng Siwei hoped that CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute will serve the national economic development and the transformation of economic pattern, realization of innovation-based country and cultivation of innovative talents. He expressed that Shenzhen is fully of vitality, and CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute is sure to complement to each other's advantages in this fertile land.
Vice Mayor Zhang Wen said the launch of CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute adds a new platform for the education cooperation between colleges in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and Shenzhen will make consistent efforts to support the Institute in Shenzhen to make positive contribution to comprehensively implementing the development strategy of building innovation-based country and accelerate the establishment of a regional innovation system and innovation circle in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
The industry-university-research building of CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute is located in the (Shenzhen Virtual University Park) Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park. The 9-storey building covers a gross floor area of 250,000 square meters. According to introduction, the Institute will integrate 16 preponderant disciplines in biological medicine, information technology and sustainable development including agricultural biology, tumor biology, genetics science, aerospace medicine and health quarantine, and establish key research centers on photoelectronic technique and network technology, environment protection and research, biology and medicine and multi-media interaction entertainment to accommodate the development of biology, Internet and new energy fields from technology innovation and management innovation.
In June 2007, Chairman Li donated HKD 30 million to Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in support of building of building an institute in Shenzhen to promote the long-term development of CUHK in Chinese mainland.
